Marketing Through Social Media - Avoid These 3 Mistakes When Trying To Generate Leads Using Twitter

Social media marketing dangersTo make the principles of Inbound Marketing work for you, you need to have a firm grasp on Search Engine Optimization and Social Media. While the principles of SEO are starting to be understood by the majority of business owners, making lead generation through social media sites like Twitter a reality still evades so many. Along the way, those in the dark about how to succeed using Twitter will make a lot of errors trying to figure it out and they'll be holding themselves back from the lead generation potential of Twitter.

Spare yourself following in their footsteps and avoid the following mistakes to help you turn Twitter into a source of highly qualified leads for your business.

Mistake #1: Being A Broadcasting Robot

The main thing you need to understand about social media is that it's not just another advertising platform. Websites like Twitter were created for non-business owners in mind. That's why setting up a feed of Tweets that only says good things about your company and always including your URL will never work. If you're only sharing information about your company and not interacting, you have become a Twitter robot.

To change this, put the social back in social media. Try to forget that you are even in business. Just focus on meeting people who share similar interests that you'll enjoy talking to. Eventually you'll start appearing in conversations with people who want to learn more about what you do and they'll turn into a solid lead for your business.

Mistake #2: Focusing On Numbers and Not Quality

When you're just starting out on Twitter, one of the worst mistakes you can make is trying to compare your Twitter account to someone else's. Don't make the mistake of thinking that someone who has 10,000 followers or more is somehow better or more successful than you. It just means they're further along. What you need to do instead is focus on building several high quality relationships in social media.

These solid and quality relationships you build will become your social media assets. Having people who mention you as someone they suggest to follow will increase your numbers organically.

Mistake #3: Not Sharing Enough High Value Material

While there are times where it's okay to share information about your business, you do need to make sure that the information you share is high value. Linking to a press release that talks about your business rather than the needs of your potential clients or customers won't work here. To fix this, look into creating a high value giveaway that your followers would opt in with their email address and contact information to receive.

Your business doesn't have to rely on discounts to draw customers in. Find out what their needs are and use whitepapers, ebooks, videos, or webinars to meet those needs. Put up a great landing page, Tweet about it, and you'll be on your way to having some strong leads.

So. Yea. I was kind of a number "2" when I got started...Then, after I started a business Twitter account, I fell into number "3". But, that's all over, now.

Now that I've got a pretty good feel for Twitter, to your three suggestions, I would add that users try and add content when they RT. Just a quick comment like, "EXCELLENT article" or "good, quick read" lets people know that you looked over any link that you're sending and are personally endorsing what you broadcast.

Oh, a quick follow-up to our conversation about "Delicious": I've been doing the bookmark work that I talked about with you. If you would like to see what I've done, so far, it's here: <a>http://delicious.com/JohnScottSmith

Essentially, in keeping my own bookmarks with clear notations, I can help other people with similar interests sort the wheat from the chaff. It's kind of like creating my own online library, complete with dogears and notes in the margins, like my real books here on the shelf.

Thanks, again, for your excellent articles, Jeff!

Jeff, another great article; regarding Twitter the biggest item is indeed, the broadcasting platform. Taking outbound marketing methods to Twitter is a good way to be ignored and get no results. Another thing is the huge number of gimmicks that are used on Twitter to get lots of followers. Its better to have a hundred people that care about what you say than 10,000 that could care less...
